A Nigerian mother, Shofumi Adepoju, has emotionally recounted how her twin sons narrowly escaped death after a school building collapsed in Lagos.

The incident happened on Monday at Yemco Schools, located on Adu Street behind County Hospital in the Ogba area of the city. Speaking during a thanksgiving testimony at church, Adepoju said her sons were inside the school’s Introtech laboratory when the building was suddenly evacuated shortly before it collapsed.

According to her, one of the twins stepped out of the lab and noticed that the entire school compound had become empty. After peeping through the window and seeing many people outside, the boys quickly ran downstairs. She said the building collapsed less than two minutes after they left the area.

Adepoju explained that the near-death experience made her sons insist on going to church to thank God for sparing their lives. She also praised a woman identified as Mummy Akudayo, who reportedly helped move about 368 students out of the building before the structure gave way.

The Lagos State Building Control Agency confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, noting that no casualties were recorded. Officials from the agency, alongside the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, visited the site to assess the damage and ensure public safety.

Authorities said early findings suggest that some form of construction activity may have been ongoing on the property before the collapse, but a full investigation is underway to determine the exact cause. Residents in the area have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with officials while safety assessments continue.
