Edo orders arrest, prosecution of students over bullying incident

The Edo State Police summoned the school to hand over the students involved in the bullying case, while the Ministry of Education set up a committee to investigate and identify all responsible parties.

The Edo State Government has directed security agencies to arrest and prosecute students of Igbinedion Education Centre who were involved in a widely circulated bullying incident, describing their actions as disturbing and unacceptable.

The State Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, revealed this during an interview, noting that the government acted swiftly after seeing the viral video showing a student being assaulted by his peers. He said the incident sparked concern among parents and the public about discipline in schools.

Afegbua stressed that there is no excuse for such behaviour, condemning the act outright. According to him, the students involved have already been expelled, while the police have been instructed to ensure they face legal consequences.

He added that he had contacted the Commissioner of Police, who confirmed that the parents of the students are expected to present them for investigation, after which appropriate charges will be filed in court.

The government also described the incident as a wake-up call for parents and educators, urging stricter supervision and better discipline in schools to prevent similar cases in the future.

Reports indicate that the viral video showed two students physically attacking another student on the ground, while a third person recorded the incident and pleaded for them to stop. The footage triggered widespread outrage on social media, leading to immediate disciplinary actions by the school.

In response, the Edo State Police Command summoned the school management and demanded that the students involved be handed over for investigation. Additionally, the Ministry of Education has set up a five-member committee to investigate the incident and identify all those responsible.
