Umaru Musa Yar’adua University in Katsina State has expelled 57 students and disciplined seven others for various forms of exam malpractice, reinforcing its zero-tolerance stance on academic dishonesty.

The management of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), located in Katsina State, has taken decisive disciplinary action by expelling 57 students found guilty of engaging in various forms of examination malpractice. The development underscores the institution’s firm commitment to upholding academic integrity and promoting a culture of honesty among its student body.
According to a statement released by Hajiya Fatima Sanda, Head of Information and Protocol at the university, the expulsions were based on the findings and recommendations of the University Central Examination Misconduct Committee (UCEMC). The university’s 125th Senate meeting reviewed and ratified the recommendations before formally approving the expulsions.
In addition to the 57 students who were expelled, UMYU imposed other disciplinary measures:
- Five students were suspended, or “rusticated,” for two academic semesters. Their examination results for the affected sessions were also cancelled.
- Two other students received official written warnings, which will remain permanently documented in their academic records as a mark of caution.
The university reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward academic dishonesty, describing examination malpractice as a serious offense that undermines the integrity of the institution and the value of its degrees. The administration warned that any future violations would attract equally strict—if not more severe—penalties.
UMYU has been working to tighten its examination processes and surveillance measures in recent years, including increased invigilation and the use of monitoring technologies during exams. These latest disciplinary actions are part of the university’s broader strategy to preserve the quality and credibility of its academic programs.
Officials further urged students to remain focused on their studies and to avoid any behavior that could jeopardize their academic careers, noting that the university is committed to providing a fair, transparent, and merit-based academic environment for all.
