Cursory: The Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, Anambra, has been officially opened by the federal government. The National Health Act mandates free medical care up to N250,000 per year for all Nigerians, irrespective of tribe, religion, or ethnic group. The hospital aims to provide high-quality treatment to the entire South-East region and prevent vandalism. The SDGs prioritize competent primary healthcare in rural communities, as highlighted by Mrs. Adejoke Adefulire-Orelope.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital’s new permanent location in Nnewi, Anambra, has been formally opened by the federal government. Speaking at the ceremony in Nnewi, the Minister of State for Health, Joseph Ekumankama, emphasized that the National Health Act had mandated that all Nigerians, regardless of tribe, religion, or ethnic group, receive free medical care up to the amount of N250,000 per year.
President Muhammadu Buhari’s representative, Ekumankama, also stated that the Act had facilitated the provision of health insurance for all Nigerians. He emphasized that the teaching hospital would give high-quality treatment to citizens of the entire South-East, not just those in Anambra.
He appealed to the people, staff, and management to ensure that the facility did not come under any form of vandalism.
“It will be a thing of sorrow if, in the next few years, this facility is seen to be deteriorating. Ensure that you render the best healthcare services to the people who will come from far and near to receive medical healthcare from this hospital and also ensure the maintenance of this beautiful edifice.”
In her remarks, Mrs. Adejoke Adefulire-Orelope, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, emphasized that one of the fundamental aims of the SDGs was to guarantee competent primary healthcare in rural communities.
Dr. Joseph Ugboaja, the Chief Medical Director of NAUTH, had earlier stated in his address that one of his goals upon taking office was to inaugurate the hospital and move it to its permanent location.
