In 2019, he successfully completed his Bachelor of Technology degree in Tourism Management, setting the stage for his Master’s journey, which commenced in 2020.

William attributes his achievements to the exceptional academic environment at DUT, acknowledging the institution’s esteemed faculty.

With aspirations to advance his academic career and establish himself as a renowned South African Scholar and Author in Tourism and Hospitality, William believes that the positives of his academic journey outweigh any challenges he encountered.

His dissertation focused on “Promoting a technologically driven tourism industry post COVID-19: A case study of hotels in Durban, South Africa.”When asked why he chose Tourism as his field of study, William explained that his passion for the industry developed during his high school years.

Recognizing the vast opportunities and multifaceted nature of Tourism, he aims to utilize it as a catalyst for local economic development in his community and to explore the world through travel.

“I loved Tourism since high school, that is where the passion developed. Tourism is a multifaceted industry and an industry full of possibilities. I want to use Tourism as a vehicle for local economic development in my community at home. Tourism is not just about studying but to also travel the world.” he said.

Upon sharing the news of his graduation, William’s family expressed their elation and viewed it as a significant achievement for the entire family. As the first graduate and now the first with a Master’s degree in his family, this accomplishment marks a new chapter filled with possibilities for both him and his loved ones.

“It feels like a dream I am still processing the achievement. I am glad I never stopped studying, my next stop is the Red Gown, currently, I am working on my PhD concept paper. I dedicate this chapter to my family as this marks a new chapter for us,” said William.

Reflecting on his achievement, William expressed his gratitude to his family, colleagues, and especially his supportive parents for their unwavering support throughout his academic journey.

“Thank you so much for being courageous and taking decisions that put our family on the map, I could not be proud of you, my child. I am encouraging you to keep pushing, you just opened a new chapter for our family,” said Mrs William, Siphiwe’s mother.

He acknowledged the invaluable guidance of his supervisor, Dr. E. Mnguni, and co-supervisor, Dr. EO Anwana, without whom he believes he would not have reached this milestone.

Looking ahead, William is excited to embark on his next academic endeavor and is currently working on his PhD concept paper. He encouraged first-year students to define their goals, emphasizing the importance of setting a clear direction for their energy and motivation, emphasizing that it all begins in one’s mind.
