FUTA Appoints Provost, Deputy For College Of Health Sciences

The Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA has appointed Professor Olusegun Ojo as Provost and Professor Victor Ukwenya, Deputy Provost of its College of Health Sciences for a period of two years each effective 1st August 2024.

Ojo is a Professor of Pathology at the Obafemi Awolowo University College of Health Sciences, Ile Ife and a Consultant Pathologist to the sister Teaching Hospital, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH).

He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos in 1983 and undertook a Postgraduate Residency Training in Pathology, achieving the Fellowship of the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College in 1989. He obtained the (Doctor of Medicine) MD degree in 2021.

Since 1990, Professor Ojo has maintained a research and clinical interest in the Gastroenterology study of the diseases of the liver and the digestive tract and had been instrumental in establishing a network of researchers in this field in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa. He had been President of the Society for the Gastroenterology in Nigeria (SOGHIN) and the Africa Middle East Association of Gastroenterology (AMAGE), an affiliate of the World Gastroenterology Organisation.

Professor Ojo is extensively published in Gastroenterology international journals and was the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Annals of Tropical Pathology, the premier Journal of Pathology in Africa. He authored “Essential Pathology for Clinical Students in the Tropics,” a standard undergraduate pathology text.

He is currently the Chairman of the Faculty of Pathology of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

Professor Ukwenya holds a BSc, MSc, and PhD in Anatomy from the University of Ilorin (2003), University of Lagos (2008) and University of Ilorin (2013) respectively.

He started his teaching career as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Anatomy, College of Medicine, University of Lagos in 2007; Lecturer II, Department of Anatomy, College of Health Sciences, Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State (2008-2012); Lecturer I, Department of Anatomy, College of Medicine, Kogi State University, Anyigba, Kogi State (2012-2014); Lecturer I, Department of Anatomy, College of Medicine, Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti (2014-2016) before joining the Department of Human Anatomy, School of Health and Health Technology, FUTA as a Senior Lecturer in 2016. He rose to the position of Reader in 2019 and became a professor in 2022 through a dint of hard work.

Ukwenya, the pioneer Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences (SBMS), FUTA, served as acting Head, Department of Human Anatomy 2016-date; Chair, Committee of Heads of Departments, SBMS (2021-2024); Chair, School Academic Board (2021-2024); and held several other leadership positions at the departmental and school levels.

Professor Ukwenya, who has over 70 research publications in reputable journals is a member of professional bodies in his field of study and has won several research grants and fellowships locally and internationally to the university.

He is a member of the Senate and has served as external examiner to many universities in Nigeria and South Africa. He has churned out lots of students at the under and post graduate levels.
