Future Lawyers in Action: Baze University Law Students Stage Simulated Armed Robbery Trial

Law students at Baze University in Abuja conducted a simulated armed robbery trial as part of their Clinical and Moot Court Practice course, demonstrating practical courtroom skills under the guidance of legal professionals and reinforcing the university’s commitment to hands-on legal education.

Abuja, FCT – Law students at Baze University, Abuja, showcased their legal skills in a simulated armed robbery trial held on Thursday, August 7. The exercise, part of the university’s Clinical and Moot Court Practice course, was designed to give students real-world courtroom experience.

Held at the Faculty of Law’s Moot Courtroom, the trial featured 400-level students performing roles including prosecutors, defence lawyers, witnesses, and court officials. The mock trial was presided over by guest legal practitioners Babayemi Olaniyan (Lehi Attorneys) and Adamu Abbas Ahman, an alumnus of Baze University.

According to a statement shared with Legit.ng, three student teams represented the prosecution, defence counsel for the first defendant, and defence for the second and third defendants. They delivered opening statements, examined witnesses, and made closing arguments, closely following actual court procedures.

Guest Legal Experts Laud Performance

Mr. Olaniyan commended the students, saying:

“I was impressed by their confidence, professionalism, and mastery of legal concepts. This wasn’t just an academic task—it clearly showed how well-prepared they are for real legal practice.”

Mr. Ashonibare added that the trial reflected months of legal research and collaboration, describing it as a crucial exercise in bridging the gap between theory and practice.

University Reaffirms Commitment to Practical Legal Education

The Faculty of Law emphasized the trial as part of its dedication to offering hands-on experience in criminal litigation:

“What we saw today is the result of strategic thinking, teamwork, and deep research. It exemplifies our commitment to preparing students for real-world legal challenges,” the university stated.

Baze University has continued to position itself as a leader in legal education in Nigeria by integrating practical training into its curriculum.
