Gunfire erupted during the SUG elections at Ebonyi State University, leaving one student injured, three suspects arrested, and raising concerns about campus security and violence in student politics.

Chaos unfolded at Ebonyi State University (EBSU) on Monday during the Students’ Union Government (SUG) elections, as gunfire broke out while votes were being counted. The violence caused panic among students and staff, forcing many to flee the venue in fear for their safety.
According to eyewitness reports, a group of armed individuals stormed the area and began firing shots into the air, apparently in an attempt to disrupt the electoral process and intimidate the crowd. In the commotion, one student was struck by a stray bullet. The injured student was immediately rushed to the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, where they are currently receiving emergency medical care.
The Ebonyi State Police Command responded promptly to the incident. Officers on the scene quickly brought the situation under control, arrested three suspects believed to be involved in the attack, and recovered a locally made pistol used in the violence.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the arrests and stated that investigations are currently ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack and whether more individuals were involved. He emphasized that the suspects will face prosecution once investigations are concluded.
SP Ukandu also reiterated the commitment of the police to ensuring peace and security within the university environment. He urged students to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring the public that law enforcement agencies will continue to maintain order, particularly during high-tension events such as student elections.
The incident has sparked concerns about the safety of students on campus and the growing influence of violence in student politics. Authorities have promised to review security measures at higher institutions across the state to prevent future occurrences.
