“I joined out of curiosity” — Student cries out for help to leave cult group

A student who joined a cult out of curiosity now fears for his life, has gone into hiding, and is urgently seeking help to safely leave the dangerous group.

A young man, identified only as “Obote,” has publicly expressed fear and regret after joining a secret cult group, saying he now feels unsafe and urgently wants to exit.

In a message shared online, he explained that curiosity led him into cultism, but the experience quickly became dangerous. He revealed that he is currently in hiding to avoid other members, describing them as violent and unpredictable.

He wrote that he no longer feels safe and is desperately seeking advice from anyone who has successfully left such groups, fearing that something terrible could happen if he remains involved.

His story has sparked widespread concern on social media, especially about the growing issue of cultism among young people in Nigeria. Many highlighted how difficult and risky it can be to leave these groups due to threats and possible retaliation.

Experts warn that individuals in such situations should seek help from trusted authorities and professional counsellors, as cult-related violence continues to pose serious risks, particularly in schools and communities

The incident underscores the urgent need for awareness and stronger efforts to prevent cult recruitment and support those trying to escape.
