I’m not aware of non payment of salaries – Education Minister

The Education Minister Malam Adamu Adamu says the ministry is not aware of non payment of salaries of lecturers.

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu has denied knowledge of unpaid salaries to lecturers in the country since February.

The minister, who made the declaration while reacting to questions from journalists at a press briefing by the Presidential Task Force in Abuja yesterday, stated that he was not aware of any lecturer or members of the education sector that had not been paid salaries since February.

Adamu said he has had several meetings with the education family and hope to resume office on Wednesday, April 15, to get updated on the issue, so as to ascertain the validity of such claims.

On the issue of conducting home lessons for children during the COVID-19 lockdown across the country, the minister said the ministry has already been planning before the pandemic.

According to him, “some of the tertiary institutions had already commenced studies online and the ministry is working with Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, to start giving lessons.

The minister, who noted that the ministry intends to extend the lessons online, also added that the practice would remain as a constant process across the country’s education system.

He explained that he had recently met with vice chancellors of universities and other stakeholders in the education sector and the press, where he issued out directives to higher institutions to discontinue private lesson in order to avoid personal contacts within this period.

Adamu further restated his awareness of some institutions that have already keyed into the online lessons programmes, stressing that the ministry’s target is for pupils in primary schools and students in secondary schools, respectively.
