The Jigawa police command has launched an investigation into a female student at the Federal University Dutse (FUD) accused of killing her newborn baby.
The student’s identity remains undisclosed. Reports indicate she gave birth in the university hostel on Monday and allegedly threw the baby from the top floor of a three-story building.
In a viral video, fellow students can be seen questioning the mother about her actions. “You can see this girl. Why did you do this?” one student asked. Another video captures students screaming as they discover the lifeless body of the baby on the ground.
The university’s department of works later arrived to transport both the deceased infant and the mother.
Lawan Shiisu Adam, the Jigawa police spokesperson, addressed the incident in a statement on Tuesday. Adam stated that the 200-level student is receiving medical care and therapy. The police have initiated an investigation into the case.
“A team of policemen raced to the scene and conveyed the baby and mother to Rasheed Shekoni Teaching Hospital Dutse, where the infant was certified dead by a medical doctor,” the statement reads. “The suspect is currently admitted and responding to therapy. An investigation is ongoing.”
