The Kano State Government has banned private and voluntary schools from arbitrarily raising fees and mandated them to seek approval through PTA meetings, while urging fairness and compliance with new guidelines to prevent exploitation of parents.

The Kano State Government has prohibited private and voluntary schools from arbitrarily raising fees and compelling parents to purchase materials exclusively from the schools.
According to Comrade Baba Abubakar Umar, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institution’s Board (KSPVIB), some schools have exploited parents through hidden charges and exorbitant fees, prompting the board to introduce new guidelines.
To address these issues, Umar stated that schools must convene a Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) meeting to discuss any fee increases. Schools must then submit a request for approval to the board, including the attendance sheet from the PTA meeting, where at least two-thirds of parents must be present.
Umar noted that the board has received complaints from parents regarding excessive fees or charges that differ from initial agreements. Despite the current economic situation, he urged schools to be realistic and fair in their charges, warning that the board will collaborate with relevant authorities to prosecute schools that operate illegally or evade taxes.
He reiterated the board’s commitment to ensuring that schools provide safe learning environments and employ qualified teachers, encouraging parents to report any schools with substandard teaching or unsafe conditions.
To enhance monitoring and ensure accurate data collection, new census forms will be distributed to private and voluntary schools. Umar emphasized that the board remains open to dialogue with schools willing to comply with the law.
He also commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his dedication to education, noting the governor’s commitment to allocating 30% of the state’s budget to the education sector and declaring a state of emergency in education.
