Kano and Edo State Governments have indefinitely postponed the resumption of primary and secondary schools, citing urgent reasons and rising fuel prices, respectively, with new dates yet to be announced.

Similar to the Edo State Government, the Kano State Government has indefinitely postponed the resumption of primary and post-primary schools for the 2024/2025 academic session.
While Edo attributed its decision to the recent increase in petrol prices, the Kano government cited “urgent reasons” for its decision but did not provide specific details.
According to PREMIUM TIMES, primary and secondary schools in both states, like many others across the country, have been on holiday for over a month and were initially scheduled to resume on Monday, September 9.
Both states have not announced a new resumption date, stating that it will be communicated later.
Kano’s postponement was announced on Saturday in a statement by Balarabe Kiru, Director of Public Enlightenment at the Ministry of Education. He quoted the Commissioner for Education, Umar Doguwa, who explained that the decision was due to some undisclosed urgent reasons.
“I wish to inform pupils, students, and parents that the previously announced resumption dates of 8th and 9th September 2024 have been postponed,” Kiru stated. “This decision is driven by urgent factors aimed at enhancing a conducive learning environment for our children.”
Kiru assured that a new resumption date would be announced soon and appealed to students, parents, and guardians to bear with any inconveniences caused by the postponement.
In a separate statement on Saturday, the Edo State Government attributed the school closure to the petrol price hike and the associated challenges faced by parents and guardians, which have created tension in the state. The government instructed all schools to remain closed.
“The government urges parents, guardians, and caregivers to closely monitor the activities of their children and wards given the current situation and the rising tension caused by the fuel hike,” stated Ojo Akin-Longe, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education.
