A Nigerian man sued his ex-girlfriend for refusing to marry him after he funded her university education, and the court ordered her to pay ₦15 million in damages.

A Nigerian man has taken his former girlfriend to court after she refused to marry him, despite his financial support throughout her university education.
According to reports, the man met the lady shortly after she finished secondary school and made his intention to marry her known to her family. However, her parents insisted she must first obtain a university degree before any marriage could take place. They allegedly agreed to the relationship on the condition that he would sponsor her education, which was expected to last about four years. The man accepted and took full responsibility for her schooling.
After she graduated, he approached her about fulfilling the earlier agreement to marry him. To his surprise, she declined, stating she was not ready for marriage and gradually began avoiding him. When he complained to her parents, they responded that their daughter was now an adult and free to make her own decisions, advising him to move on and find someone else.
When questioned, the woman reportedly said she no longer had feelings for him and made it clear she had no intention of marrying him. She also refused to refund the money spent on her education, arguing that he chose to support her willingly. She further claimed that their past relationship made things even, implying there was no debt to repay.
The case eventually went to court, where the judge ruled in favor of the man. While acknowledging that no one can be forced into marriage, the court held that the woman had benefited from a clear promise that led the man to invest heavily in her education.
As a result, the court ordered the woman to pay ₦15 million in damages to compensate for the financial and emotional loss suffered by the man.
