Lady Graduated With First Class in University and Nigerian Law School, Shares Her Story

Lateefat Bolanta, a law graduate with double first-class honors, reveals how her husband’s support and her relentless determination helped her balance marriage, motherhood, and academic success in an inspiring journey.

Meet Lateefat Olaide Bolanta, a remarkable woman from Osun State, Nigeria, who has defied all odds to achieve not one but two first-class degrees in Law—first from Ekiti State University and then from the Nigerian Law School.

From Childhood Dreams to Academic Triumphs

Lateefat’s dream of becoming a lawyer was sparked by her father’s friend, who was a lawyer, and her father’s encouragement to pursue this path.

Despite pressures from teachers to choose science in secondary school, she followed her passion for the arts, setting her sights on a legal career.

Her journey was far from smooth. After completing her WASCE in 2006, she applied to various universities. She was initially accepted into the University of Ilorin in 2007 but couldn’t attend due to financial constraints.

Following her sister’s advice, she moved to Ado Ekiti and applied to the University of Ado Ekiti (now Ekiti State University), but faced several setbacks due to the Faculty of Law’s disaccreditation and limited admissions.

Overcoming Obstacles with Determination

In 2008, Lateefat was admitted to the Diploma in Law program at the University of Ado Ekiti. Although the program extended beyond its intended two years, she excelled, graduating among the top five students. Despite her qualifications, she faced further rejections from the university’s law faculty.

Undeterred, Lateefat enrolled at the National Open University, where she continued to face challenges, including the non-accreditation of the Law program. She worked various jobs to support herself, selling used clothes and utilizing her skills in graphic and web design. In 2016, her persistence paid off when she was finally admitted to Ekiti State University’s law faculty through direct entry.

Balancing Family, Studies, and Entrepreneurship

Lateefat’s academic journey coincided with significant personal milestones. She met her husband while campaigning for student leadership positions and married him in 2017.

With his unwavering support, including financial assistance for her tuition, Lateefat balanced her roles as a wife, mother, and student. She juggled her studies with running a printing business and caring for her family.

“Balancing between being a wife, mother, and a student, and running some businesses so as not to be idle was a major challenge for me,” she recalls. Despite these challenges, she graduated as the best in her faculty in 2021, achieving the second first-class degree in the history of Ekiti State University’s Faculty of Law.

Achieving Double First-Class Honors

Lateefat’s dedication and hard work continued at the Nigerian Law School, where she graduated with another first-class honor in 2023. “For 15 years, I’d been pursuing this career, and I didn’t just graduate; I finished with a first-class in Law, so I was incredibly happy,” she says.

Her success is a testament to her perseverance and the support of her husband. “Yes, he made it possible. As of the time I got the admission, if no one paid my tuition, I would have forfeited that admission,” she acknowledges.

Looking to the Future

Currently an assistant lecturer at Ekiti State University, Lateefat is planning to establish her own law firm. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasizes the importance of passion, discipline, and consistency. “Discipline yourself to excel in all areas, and attend classes. Attendance for classes can never be overemphasized,” she advises aspiring students.

Lateefat’s story is an inspiring reminder that with determination, support, and hard work, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome. Her journey from a young girl with a dream to a double first-class lawyer and educator is a beacon of hope and motivation for all who hear it.
