The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on Tuesday, said that the country is currently bleeding over banditry, terrorism and other security challenges due to a lack of education.
The Union stated this in a text of a press conference held by the Lagos Zone of ASUU held at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB).
The Zone comprises Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye; Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED); the University of Lagos (UNILAG and FUNAAB.
The Coordinator of the zone, Comrade Adelaja Odukoya, noted that the political class had continued to sow seeds of insecurity due to criminal neglect of the education sector.
Odukoya faulted the federal government for not living up to its constitutional responsibilities in educating all Nigerians, submitting that the future of the country lies in the hands of the educated youths.

He explained that the federal government had failed to address all the issues that led to the ongoing strike such as the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS); implementation of the renegotiated agreement; payment of all outstanding allowances and fulfilment of all other issues as contained in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Union.
“None of the issues that necessitated the strike has been resolved. The issues of re-negotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement; payment platforms in the Universities (IPPIS/UTAS); proliferation of state universities; non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances; promotion of arrears and check-off dues and the release of White Papers of Visitation Panels of federal universities,” he added.
Odukoya, therefore, informed that the current strike action would not be suspended until the government addresses the adoption of UTAS and other issues raised by the Union
