11-Year-Old Student Dies Amid Bullying Allegations

An 11-year-old student of Federal Government College Ikot Ekpene died under controversial circumstances amid bullying allegations, with conflicting accounts from social media, the school, and the family as investigations continue to determine the cause of death.

An 11-year-old student of Federal Government College Ikot Ekpene, identified as UfokObong Godwin, has died under unclear circumstances, sparking concern and widespread reactions.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of April 5, with ongoing investigations by both the school and the family to determine the exact cause of death.

Reports circulating on social media allege that the boy was assaulted by a senior student after refusing to hand over his provisions, leading to injuries that later worsened. It was also claimed that the school treated him without informing his parents and allowed him to return home without disclosing the full situation.

According to these accounts, the boy had earlier complained of neck pain around April 1 and received medication, but later died from complications linked to blood clots in his throat.

However, the school authorities have provided a different version of events. The principal stated that the student visited the school clinic, was treated, and continued his normal activities, including exams, before returning home. While acknowledging reports that he may have been hit by another student, the school said he appeared to have recovered before leaving.

Some teachers also indicated that an earlier incident in mid-March involved the boy complaining of being struck in the stomach, after which he was examined, found stable, and completed his exams before all students vacated the school on March 17.

The boy’s family has urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information, stressing that many online claims are inaccurate. A family spokesperson assured that a thorough investigation is ongoing and that the truth will be made known.

They also called for stronger action against bullying and emphasized their commitment to seeking justice.

The case comes shortly after a separate bullying incident in Edo State, where authorities expelled and moved to prosecute students involved in a viral bullying case.
