Despite being visually impaired and facing personal, financial, and security challenges, Nigerian scholar Paul Okpanachi earned a master’s degree in Egypt and secured a fully funded PhD scholarship at the University of Ottawa, exemplifying remarkable resilience and determination.

A resilient Nigerian scholar, Paul Okpanachi, has overcome significant challenges to earn a master’s degree from the American University in Cairo, Egypt, and has now been awarded a fully funded PhD scholarship to the University of Ottawa, Canada.
Paul, who is visually impaired, earned his bachelor’s degree in History and International Studies from Kogi State University, Nigeria. Following his undergraduate studies, he won a scholarship to pursue further education in Egypt.
According to his colleague, Samuel Ayankoso—who studied alongside him at the American University—Paul is highly independent and determined. Samuel described him as a hardworking individual who completed his academic work using a personal computer, despite his visual impairment.
After completing his master’s program, Paul returned to Nigeria where he worked as an investigative journalist, enduring unstable income and personal hardship. He also faced insecurity, including a robbery incident where he and his wife were attacked in front of their Abuja home. Remarkably, Paul resisted the attackers’ attempt to steal his phone, even as they took his wife’s.
Despite these setbacks, Paul remained focused on his academic journey. Expressing gratitude for his achievements, Paul wrote on Facebook:
“It is the Lord’s doing… we were glad to be so honoured.”
Paul’s inspiring story is a powerful reminder of perseverance and the potential to rise above adversity to achieve greatness.
