A parent has accused Nigeria and the University of Benin (UNIBEN) of institutional failure after the school admitted 350 students into its Optometry programme, collected fees, commenced lectures, then abruptly retained only 150 due to quota issues—leaving others confused, distressed, and facing uncertain academic futures without clear communication or official explanation.

A worried parent of a University of Benin (UNIBEN) student raised an alarm over unfair treatment of students admitted into the Doctor of Optometry programme for 2025/2026. UNIBEN admitted 350 students, but later claimed it could retain just 150 due to quota and accreditation issues.
The affected students received official admission letters, paid acceptance fees, and began lectures as full-time Optometry students in November 2025. But four months in, only 150 students will remain, while others are transferred to different courses.
Many students are now denied clearance, with exams scheduled for March. “What pains me most is that these children did nothing wrong,” the parent wrote. “We paid acceptance fees in good faith.”
The parent accused UNIBEN of lacking transparency, unclear communication on student selection, and handling the matter quietly. Students are confused, anxious, and uncertain about their academic future.
The situation is called an institutional failure, appealing for public attention and intervention. UNIBEN hasn’t issued an official statement addressing concerns.
