Yusuf Abednego made history as the first Political Science student in over a decade to graduate with First-Class at UNIMAID, overcoming academic challenges and record-keeping errors to achieve his goal.

A brilliant Nigerian student, Yusuf Abednego, has made history at the University of Maiduguri’s (UNIMAID) Department of Political Science by becoming the first student in over a decade to graduate with a First-Class degree.
Out of 192 students in his graduating class, Yusuf was the only one to achieve this honor, despite facing numerous academic challenges and administrative inconsistencies throughout his studies.
His struggles began in his first year when his GPA was incorrectly recorded, and similar errors persisted, making his journey to First-Class even more difficult. Additionally, rumors circulated that no student had been awarded First-Class in the department for ten years, with some suggesting non-academic factors played a role in grading disparities.
Despite these setbacks, Yusuf remained determined, balancing his academics with leadership roles in various student organizations. Even when his grades suffered due to certain lecturers’ grading policies, he continued to strive for excellence.
By his final year, Yusuf was the top student in his department, but an error in his records nearly cost him his First-Class. After discovering that a course he had scored an A in was mistakenly recorded as a C, he provided proof to the Head of Department, who confirmed the mistake. With the correction, Yusuf officially secured his First-Class, marking a historic achievement for UNIMAID’s Political Science department.
Reflecting on his journey, Yusuf expressed gratitude for his perseverance, proving that dedication and resilience can overcome even the toughest academic obstacles.
