ASUU Warns of January Strike as FG Fails to Address Long-Standing Issues

ASUU has delayed a nationwide strike to give the Federal Government more time to address unresolved issues but warns of decisive action in January if no progress is made.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has delayed a proposed nationwide strike to give the Federal Government more time to address unresolved grievances but has warned that decisive action will be taken in January if no progress is made.

ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed frustration over the government’s inaction despite months of negotiations and extended deadlines. Speaking in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, Osodeke stated:

“Several months later, the government has not done anything concrete as regards all our issues. If this continues, we will take decisive action early January.”

At the union’s last general meeting in November, members reluctantly agreed to extend the government’s grace period to the end of December, hoping for resolutions. However, Osodeke lamented that no substantial progress had been made, noting:

“We’ve been appealing to our members for patience, but the same old story persists. We will reconvene in early January to determine our next steps.”

ASUU clarified that a fresh strike notice is unnecessary, as the union has been extending the initial notice in compliance with labor laws.

Negotiations with the government’s renegotiation committee have also stalled, with no feedback provided weeks after their last meeting. Osodeke questioned how much longer the union must wait for responses to issues that have lingered for years.

Appealing to Nigerians for understanding, ASUU stressed that strikes are a last resort:

“We only embark on strikes when members have been pushed to the wall. This is not our preferred course of action.”

The union remains firm in its demand for the government to fulfill its commitments, warning that continued inaction will leave it with no choice but to act decisively in the new year.
