Nigerian Student Jailed for Defrauding Chinese Woman of $50

A 21-year-olf Nigerian student, Adakole Peter has been sentenced to one year in prison for defrauding a Chinese woman of $50 gift card which he sold for N20000 by posing as a soldier.

The Gwagwalada Division of the FCT High Court has sentenced 21-year-old student Adakole Peter to one year in prison for defrauding a Chinese woman of $50.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged Peter with two counts of cheating by impersonation and pretending to be a military personnel. He pleaded guilty and asked for leniency.

Justice Aliyu Shafa, delivering the judgment, offered Peter the option of a N150,000 fine. The judge also ordered Peter to sign an affidavit of good behavior and directed that the Redmi phone used in the crime be sold, with the proceeds deposited into the federal government’s account through the EFCC. The $50 recovered from Peter will also be paid into the federal government account.

In his plea for mercy, Peter expressed remorse, stating, “I have repented and realized my mistakes. I plead with the court to temper justice with mercy.”

His defense counsel, Bridget Abang, emphasized his age and status as a first-time offender in her appeal for leniency. She noted that Peter had signed a plea bargain agreement on June 10.

Prosecution counsel I.D. Iloakasia informed the court that between April and May, Peter deceived his victim, Ruth Novick, by posing as Steve M. Marks, a military personnel. Peter induced Novick to send him $50 in gift cards, which he then sold online for N20,000.

The prosecutor highlighted that Peter’s actions violated section 321 of the Penal Code Act, Laws of the Federation Abuja, 1990, and are punishable under Section 324 of the same Act. Iloakasia urged the court to forfeit the money and instrument recovered from Peter to the federal government through the EFCC.
