The Governing Council of Northwest University, Kano, has officially appointed Professor Aisha Garba Habib as the Acting Vice Chancellor of the institution.


The appointment ceremony took place on Thursday, 16th October 2025, at the Council Chamber of the Main Campus.
The event commenced with an opening prayer offered by the Chief Imam of the University, Dr. Ismail Muhammad Salisu, followed by a welcome address from the Registrar, Dr. Adm. Isyaku Adamu, who warmly welcomed members of the Council, Management, and staff to the historic gathering marking a significant moment in the University’s leadership transition.
In his opening remarks, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, His Excellency Professor Hafiz Abubakar, MFR, emphasized the principle of leadership continuity in the University system. He noted that the tenure of the former Vice Chancellor, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, officially came to an end on 15th October 2025, signifying the conclusion of an impactful administration that advanced the University’s academic and infrastructural growth.
Professor Abubakar remarked, “Everything that has a beginning must surely have an end. Yesterday marked the end of Professor Kurawa’s tenure, and today, in line with the University’s laws, we cannot allow a vacuum in leadership. Hence, we are gathered to witness the formal appointment of Professor Aisha Garba Habib as the Acting Vice Chancellor of this great institution.”
He described Professor Habib as a distinguished academic and seasoned administrator who has contributed immensely to the development of the University since its formative years. He therefore called on all members of staff to accord her the maximum support and cooperation required to ensure the continued progress of the institution.
Upon receiving her letter of appointment, Professor Aisha Garba Habib delivered a gracious acceptance speech, expressing appreciation to the Governing Council for the confidence reposed in her. She assured the University community of her readiness to work tirelessly in advancing the University’s vision and maintaining the standards set by her predecessors.
In her remarks, Professor Habib stated, “I am deeply honoured by this appointment, and I seek the collective support of staff, students, and stakeholders to sustain the University’s tradition of excellence and commitment to service.”
Speaking further, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) and the University Librarian congratulated the new Acting Vice Chancellor, describing her as an accomplished scholar and an exemplary leader whose administrative experience will undoubtedly strengthen the institution’s stability and progress.
Professor Aisha Garba Habib is an erudite scholar of Islamic Studies with a distinguished academic and administrative career. She has served in several capacities within the University system, including Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Dean, Faculty of Humanities, and Dean, Students’ Affairs Division, where she demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to student welfare, academic excellence, and institutional development. She also held positions as Head of Department, Islamic Studies, and Vice Principal, School of Preliminary Studies, among others.
Beyond her administrative engagements, Professor Habib has been actively involved in national academic and educational activities. She has served as a Member of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Situation Room Group for several consecutive years, and also as a Member of the National Universities Commission (NUC) Accreditation Panel for Islamic Studies at various universities across the country.
Her commitment to higher education governance is further reflected in her active participation in numerous University committees, including those on Strategic Planning, Quality Assurance, Students’ Discipline, Public Lectures, and Law Review, among others.
Academically, Professor Habib holds a Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. in Islamic Studies from Bayero University, Kano, and has complemented her academic qualifications with advanced training in Information and Communication Technology. She is a respected member of several professional and scholarly bodies, including the Nigerian Association of Teachers of Arabic and Islamic Studies, the Islamic Forum of Nigeria, and the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT).
Her appointment marks a significant milestone in the history of Northwest University Kano, as she becomes the first distinguished female scholar to lead the institution in an acting capacity. Her wealth of experience, deep commitment to scholarship, and strong administrative background are expected to sustain the University’s trajectory of excellence and growth.
