Akinteye Babatunde, a student of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, was elected as the new president of the National Association of Nigerian Students after a peaceful convention held in Abuja.

A student of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Akinteye Babatunde, has emerged as the new national president of the National Association of Nigerian Students following the successful conclusion of the association’s 2026 convention in Abuja.
The election took place at the Old Parade Ground under tight security supervision, with officers of the Nigeria Police Force and operatives of the Department of State Services monitoring activities throughout the convention. Delegates described the gathering as one of the most peaceful conventions ever organised by the student body.
Akinteye, who previously served as the Senate President of NANS, defeated four other contestants in a keenly contested presidential race to secure victory. He officially takes over leadership from the outgoing president, Olushola Oladoja, whose tenure recently came to an end.
Speaking shortly after his emergence, the newly elected president thanked delegates from different tertiary institutions across the country for trusting him with the leadership of the association. He promised to sustain the achievements recorded by the previous administration while also promoting unity among Nigerian students.
He praised the peaceful conduct of the election, noting that there were no reports of violence, gunshots, or major disagreements during the entire convention process. According to him, the smooth exercise reflected the unity and maturity within the student association.
Akinteye further assured students that his administration would focus strongly on students’ welfare and ensure that the activities of the association become more impactful across campuses nationwide. He stated that Nigerian students would soon begin to feel the presence of the new leadership through its programmes and advocacy efforts.
Outgoing president Olushola Oladoja also expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election, describing it as one of the happiest moments of his administration. He said he was confident in Akinteye’s leadership abilities and prayed for wisdom, strength, and success for the incoming president as he begins his tenure leading the student association.
