The Osun State Police Command has begun investigating an alleged shooting involving a student and his family in Osogbo, with suspected officers under probe and the police covering the victims’ medical bills while urging calm and due process.

The Osun State Police Command has launched an investigation into an alleged shooting and reckless pursuit involving a student and members of his family in Osogbo.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the Command said its attention was drawn to a viral video and a press release released on February 22, 2026, by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, concerning the incident.
The police disclosed that a preliminary investigation had commenced into the incident, which reportedly occurred between Itaolokan Junction and the Oke Ayepe area of Osogbo. Investigators are currently reviewing operational records and gathering eyewitness accounts.
The statement further confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan—represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and other senior officers—visited the victims at the hospital. The victims were said to be responding positively to treatment, with the Command taking responsibility for their medical expenses.
Commissioner Gotan has ordered a thorough and transparent investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, in line with the procedures of the Nigeria Police Force. Officers suspected to have been involved are currently under investigation.
The Command emphasized that any unauthorised or reckless discharge of firearms, if proven, would not be tolerated, adding that officers found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action.
Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, accountability, transparency, and the protection of human rights, the police appealed to members of the public to provide credible information, video evidence, or firsthand accounts to aid the investigation.
While acknowledging the constitutional rights of citizens, the Command urged student groups and other stakeholders to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
