The management of University of Cross River State, UNICROSS has Suspended some Students Over Campus Shooting Incident

The Management of the University of Cross River State has received with grave concern reports of a security breach on Wednesday, April 3, 2025 the first day of the First Semester Examinations for the 2024/2025 Academic Session – within the Calabar Campus of the University.
Investigations and credible eyewitness accounts revealed that one Charles Mbinghi Ogar with Registration Number: (19/URP/069) of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, and Emmanuel Ogochukwu Obi with Registration Number: (19/PHY/057) of the Department of Physics, along with a group of their Associates, aggressively confronted Mr. Eyong Inah Eyong, a Staff of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
In the course of that confrontation, Mr. Charles allegedly shot at Mr. Eyong and the projectile (pellet) from the shot ricocheted and struck a Postgraduate Student who was passing by, leading to his immediate hospitalization.
Their actions not only endangered lives but also caused widespread panic, commotion, and disruption across the Campus. Academic activities, particularly the examinations scheduled for the day, had to be suspended abruptly as Students and Staff fled for safety while they and their accomplices fled the scene.
This conduct constitutes a gross violation of the University’s rules and regulations as outlined in the Students’ Handbook and the Code of Conduct, including but not limited to:
- Possession and use of dangerous weapons on Campus
- Threat to life and physical assault
- Disruption of scheduled academic activities
- Conduct likely to cause a breach of peace
In view of the gravity of these infractions, and in line with the provisions of the University’s disciplinary guidelines, the University Management has resolved as follows:
- . They are hereby suspended indefinitely from the University with immediate effect.
- They are completely barred from entering or participating in any academic or social activity within any campus of the University.
- Their case has been formally referred to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and prosecution where necessary.
- The University shall await the outcome of the police investigation, upon which further internal disciplinary action will be taken.
Please note that non-compliance with this directive will attract severe consequences, including possible expulsion and criminal prosecution.
They are advised to stay away from all University premises during this period.
They should be guided accordingly.
