Police Arrest 13-Year-Old Pupil for Threatening Classmates with Homemade Gun in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command arrested 13-year-old Samuel Sunday for threatening classmates with a homemade gun taken from his father’s wardrobe, alongside other arrests related to child abduction and trafficking.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended Samuel Sunday, a 13-year-old student of St. Paul Primary School in Ikot Ibiok, Eket Local Government Area, for brandishing a homemade firearm and threatening his classmates.

During a press conference at the Command’s headquarters in Ikot Akpan-Abia, Uyo, Public Relations Officer DSP Timfon John revealed that the young suspect took the weapon from his father’s wardrobe on November 24, 2024, and was arrested on January 30, 2025.

According to John, police acted on credible intelligence leading to the arrest of Samuel, his father, and the recovery of the pistol. She stated that an investigation is ongoing.

“On January 30, 2025, at approximately 8:00 AM, we received reliable information that Samuel Sunday, a 13-year-old pupil from Ikot Ibiok village in Eket LGA, was armed and threatening to shoot fellow students at school on January 28,” John explained.

“The police officers swiftly took action, apprehending the suspect and seizing the locally made pistol. During questioning, Samuel admitted to possessing the gun since November 2024, having retrieved it from his father’s bedroom. His father was subsequently arrested, and investigations are still in progress.”

The command also reported the arrest of two women, Roseline Maurice and Eno Udoka, for conspiring to abduct a child in Obong Itam village, Itu LGA, in June 2024, and selling the victim for N200,000 to their usual buyer in Cross River State.

The police noted that the suspects used the proceeds from this crime to purchase various household items, including a refrigerator, television, and fan, all of which have since been recovered.

Additionally, John highlighted the arrest of individuals involved in a child trafficking syndicate targeting young girls, coercing them into relationships with men to bear children for sale.

“In a separate incident on February 1, 2025, following complaints from two 18-year-old girls about an attempted trafficking scheme to Cross River State, our officers acted swiftly, apprehending Gift Essien Tommy and Peace Ekanem,” she added.

The command also paraded a 60-year-old man accused of defiling a nine-year-old girl in a secluded area and subsequently offering her two hundred Naira.

John confirmed that all suspects would be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations. She further stated that Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare is committed to eradicating crime and criminal activities in the state.
