Prioritize Your Academic Pursuit – FUL VC, Prof. Akinwumi Tells 4,925 Matriculating Students

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, has charged the newly admitted students of the University to prioritize their academic pursuits and resist the temptation of engaging in destructive tendencies, cautioning that their actions would not only reflect on them individually but also affect the reputation of one of Nigeria’s fast-growing Institutions – FUL. Professor Akinwumi gave the admonition during the 12th Matriculation Ceremony of the University held on Thursday where a total of 4,925 matriculants took oath of allegiance.

In his address entitled “A Message of Responsibility to our Matriculating Scholars,” the University chief executive stated that he was very delighted to welcome the fresh students, whom he described as “bright minds,” into the university family, adding that each one of them possesses unique talents, experiences, and aspirations, and look forward to the contributions they would bring to the academic community and beyond.

The Vice-Chancellor urged the new students to seize the opportunities for personal and intellectual growth that await them at FUL as they embark on a transformative academic journey, assuring that their time at the prestigious University has the potential of shaping them into innovative leaders and scholars of the highest caliber.

He said: “Today marks a significant milestone in your academic journey as you officially matriculate into our esteemed university. Congratulations on your admission! You have successfully navigated through a rigorous selection process, and your presence here today is a testament to your hard work, dedication, and intellectual promise.

“At Federal University Lokoja, our mission is to provide quality education, foster critical thinking, and produce well-rounded graduates who are equipped with the skills and knowledge to contribute meaningfully to society. Our vision is to be the best among the universities in Nigeria and one of the top ten universities in Africa. We aspire to become a world-class University recognized for excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement. These guiding principles serve as our compass, driving us towards academic innovation, social responsibility, and transformative impact.

However, as we celebrate your entry into our academic community, it is crucial to recognize the responsibilities that accompany this privilege. You are not just students; you are ambassadors of our university. Hence, as you take your oath today, remember it binds you to obedience to authority and maintaining good conduct throughout your stay in Federal University Lokoja. Any violation of this oath will be met with appropriate sanctions.”

Speaking further, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized the importance of upholding the values and standards of the University, saying “Federal University Lokoja has zero tolerance for social vices such as cultism, examination misconducts, and indecent dressing. These behaviors not only undermine the integrity of our institution but also jeopardize the safety and well-being of our entire community.”

He harped on the need for the students to be security conscious at all times and prioritize their personal safety above other things, noting that while the University environment is safe and welcoming, it is important that they remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, as well as report any suspicious activities or concerns to the appropriate authorities.
