Taraba State University Student Apologizes to CAN Over Costume Day Outfit

A Taraba State University student, Endurance Dennis, publicly apologized to the Christian Association of Nigeria and others after wearing a nun-inspired costume deemed offensive, admitting her actions were insensitive and pledging to be more respectful in the future.

A female student of Taraba State University, Endurance Dennis, has issued a public apology to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the university chaplaincy, and the general public following backlash over her choice of attire during the institution’s recently held Costume Day celebration.

Dennis, whose outfit resembled that of a Catholic nun, faced criticism from members of the Christian community who considered the costume disrespectful and offensive to their religious beliefs and sacred symbols. The controversy quickly gained traction online, prompting widespread discussion about religious sensitivity and the boundaries of creative expression in public institutions.

In a reflective and emotional Facebook post that has since gone viral, the student acknowledged that her choice of costume was made in ignorance, initially perceiving it as lighthearted fun without considering its deeper religious implications. However, after receiving feedback and gaining a clearer understanding of the spiritual and emotional weight such religious attire carries, she admitted her actions were insensitive.

“It was never my intention to mock, insult, or ridicule any religion,” Dennis wrote. “I have come to understand that what I wore touched on matters that are sacred to many, and I sincerely regret the hurt it caused.”

She further expressed gratitude to those who reached out to correct her “in love rather than condemnation,” stating that their words helped her grasp the gravity of the situation. Dennis concluded by promising to be more respectful and culturally sensitive in her future conduct, both online and offline.

The incident has sparked broader conversations on social media around religious tolerance, freedom of expression, and the responsibilities of students during cultural and social events within academic institutions.
