Cursory: Twin sisters Tia and Tyra Smith shared the title of valedictorian at Lindblom Math and Science Academy, achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA and excelling in Advanced Placement courses. They have a passion for theater and initiated their school’s black history art gallery. Both received full-ride scholarships, with Tyra studying theater and economics at Northwestern University, while Tia pursued theater and statistics at Duke University.

A few years ago, in 2019, twin sisters Tia and Tyra Smith had the remarkable achievement of sharing the title of valedictorian at Lindblom Math and Science Academy, located just outside of Chicago.
They both obtained a perfect 4.0 GPA, not only in their individual studies but also in their combined 12 Advanced Placement courses.
Tyra expressed her happiness in achieving this honor alongside her sister, emphasizing the collaborative effort they put in to reach this point, recognizing it as their final shared accomplishment before parting ways.
“I was glad it was both of us,” Tyra told Good Morning America.
“We really worked together in order to be where we were. It was the last thing we could do together in school before we have to leave each other.”
During their high school years, Tyra found a particular interest in biotechnology and problem-based learning math, while Tia enjoyed studying human geography and U.S. history.
In addition to their academic successes, the twins were responsible for initiating their school’s inaugural black history art gallery, named “More Than 28.”
The sisters also shared a passion for theater, and they even collaborated with healthcare company Baxter International on a community awareness campaign for kidney disease.
They played a role in the screenwriting of a special episode of the television show “Black-ish.” Tia expressed that Theater 1 had been the most rewarding and influential aspect of shaping her identity.
“Theater 1 has been the most rewarding and the most influential in shaping the person I am today,” Tia said.
In college, both Tia and Tyra pursued theater as their major, though at separate institutions. Tyra enrolled at Northwestern University to study theater and economics, while Tia joined Duke University to study theater and statistics. Notably, both sisters received full-ride scholarships to support their education.
Their mother, Lemi-Ola Erinkitola, expressed immense pride in her daughters’ accomplishments. She found solace in the fact that despite their upcoming separation for college, the shared valedictorian title served as a meaningful culmination of their academic journey together.
She said, “I was glad because they’re going to separate colleges and it put a nice, finishing touch on their years together academically. It was very, very emotional and goes beyond just the title. It was the fact they can share that platform together and a memory they can carry throughout their journeys in life.”
