“Absolutely amazing” – African Man Earns PhD in Aerospace Engineering at 29

A Ugandan man, Dr. Jdiobe Muwanika makes history in Uganda by becoming one of the first to earn a PhD in Aerospace Engineering at a young age.

Dr. Jdiobe Muwanika has made history in Uganda by becoming one of the first to earn both a Master’s and PhD in Aerospace Engineering at a young age.

Dr. Muwanika, 29, overcame significant challenges, including losing his parents early in life, to graduate from Oklahoma State University on May 10.

His research on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with ducted counter-rotating propellers could significantly improve UAV design and performance by making them quieter, more efficient, and versatile.

Despite his hardships, Dr. Muwanika (born in 1995) pursued education fervently, attending Two Way Primary School in Busia District and Lake View Secondary School in Jinja District, before obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2019, a Master’s in Aerospace Engineering in 2020, and a PhD in Aerospace Engineering in May 2024 from Oklahoma State University.

Driven by a passion for science and innovation, Dr. Muwanika now works in research and development at Boeing. He remains committed to contributing to Uganda’s aerospace industry and plans to collaborate with local institutions in the future.

President Museveni has encouraged Ugandans to focus on science, research, and technology to promote development and industrial growth.

Dr. Muwanika aspires to mentor the next generation of Ugandan scientists and engineers and support the aerospace sector’s growth in Uganda. He advises young people to acknowledge God, nurture their passion, and approach their work with discipline.

Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Monica Musenero, noted the government’s efforts to track skilled Ugandans and provide specific training opportunities. She praised Dr. Muwanika as a pioneer and expressed hopes of integrating his expertise back into the country’s development.
