Man earns university degree 13 years after surviving witchcraft accusation attack

After surviving a brutal witchcraft accusation attack in 2014, Asuquo Edet overcame adversity with the help of a humanitarian rescuer and went on to graduate from Akwa Ibom State University 13 years later.

Asuquo Edet has graduated from Akwa Ibom State University, more than a decade after a life-threatening incident in which he was accused of using witchcraft to cause his father’s death.

The incident happened in 2014 in Udung Uko Local Government Area, where relatives allegedly attacked him and left him for dead over the accusation. He was later rescued by Danish humanitarian Anja Ringgren Lovén and her husband, who provided medical treatment and supported his education.

After years of recovery and schooling, Edet successfully earned a degree in Genetics and Biotechnology in 2026, marking a powerful turnaround from tragedy to achievement.

His story has drawn widespread admiration, with many praising his resilience and determination. Lovén recalled rescuing him in a critical condition but noted his strong will to survive and succeed.

His journey also highlights ongoing efforts in Nigeria to combat harmful witchcraft accusations, especially against vulnerable individuals, with increased advocacy and interventions seen in states like Akwa Ibom and Cross River in recent years.
