Wigwe University in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, recently inaugurated in August 2024, has become Nigeria’s most expensive university, surpassing Covenant, Nile, Pan-Atlantic, and Baze universities.

Founded by the late Herbert Wigwe, co-founder of Access Holdings, the university charges fees up to N12 million per session.

Wigwe University offers upscale facilities, including 24-hour electricity, WiFi, and an active conservation plan. It features diverse programs across four colleges: Management and Social Sciences, Arts, Science and Computing, and Engineering.

Despite its high fees, the institution aims to attract both Nigerian and international students, with options for naira and dollar payments.

The university’s high cost has sparked debates about accessibility for middle and lower-income Nigerians. Critics argue that such fees exclude economically disadvantaged students, perpetuating inequality. In contrast, supporters claim that quality education justifies the high fees.

Wigwe University defends its pricing, emphasizing its commitment to excellence and leadership development. It offers flexible payment plans, including student loans and installment options, to mitigate the financial burden. Nonetheless, the university insists on full payment of the N1 million accommodation fee upfront.

Access to higher education in Nigeria remains a contentious issue, exacerbated by high tuition fees and frequent strikes in public universities. These challenges create significant barriers for students from low-income backgrounds, limiting their educational opportunities and perpetuating socioeconomic disparities.
