Young Ghanaian Woman Who Worked as a Cleaner to Fund Her Education Graduates as Valedictorian With 3.95 CGPA

A young Ghanaian woman, Xorlali Opel, who once worked as a cleaner to fund her education, has graduated from Central University as valedictorian with a 3.95 CGPA after years of resilience, self-study, and determination.

A young Ghanaian woman, Xorlali Opel, has achieved remarkable academic success after years of hard work and sacrifice, graduating as the valedictorian of Central University with an outstanding 3.95 CGPA in Psychology.

Xorlali’s journey was far from easy. After completing Senior High School, she spent three years at home because her family could not afford to send her to university. Instead of giving up, she used the waiting period to build herself academically and creatively. She taught herself neuroscience online, learned graphic design, and practiced creative writing — all while working long hours as a cleaner to support her siblings and save for her education.

When she eventually gained admission to Central University, she carried her determination into the classroom. She consistently ranked at the top of her class throughout the Psychology program, ultimately graduating with a near-perfect score and earning the title of valedictorian.

Her exceptional performance was celebrated during the graduation ceremony, where she received several honours, including a MacBook, $1,000, and a certificate sponsored by the ICGC Head Office. The awards were personally presented by the Chancellor, Pastor Mensa Otabil — a moment Xorlali described as symbolic of how far she had come from her days cleaning floors to pay for school.

In her valedictory address, she reflected on the challenges she overcame, expressing gratitude to her family, friends, and the university community. She also encouraged her fellow graduates to approach the future with the same spirit of resilience and excellence that carried her through her journey.

“I did all of this while teaching myself, supporting my siblings, and believing that one day, the right opportunity would come,” she said, her voice filled with emotion.

Xorlali’s story continues to inspire many across Africa, serving as a powerful reminder that determination, self-belief, and hard work can turn even the most difficult beginnings into extraordinary success.
