A young Nigerian scholar, Angela Sughnen, has achieved remarkable success, earning a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) with distinction in Biological Sciences from the University of Cambridge. Angela’s journey to Cambridge was made possible by the prestigious Mastercard Foundation Scholarship, which provides comprehensive financial support to students from underprivileged backgrounds.
The Mastercard Foundation Scholarship covers all educational expenses, including tuition, accommodation, living stipends, a laptop, books, and travel costs, ensuring that talented students can pursue their studies without financial barriers.
Applications for the 2025 Mastercard Cambridge Scholarship are currently open, with a January 2025 deadline.
Angela shared her academic success on LinkedIn, describing her transformative year at Cambridge. She highlighted her work on an advanced research project in Crop Sciences, which played a significant role in her achieving a distinction in her MPhil.
Reflecting on her Cambridge experience, Angela expressed how surreal it feels to have achieved what once seemed like an unreachable dream. Beyond academics, she fully embraced life at Cambridge, connecting with an inspiring community of scholars and researchers.
During her time at Cambridge, Angela also engaged actively in the African Society of Cambridge University (ASCU), where she helped organize the Cambridge Africa Conference. This annual event brings together distinguished African scholars and professionals from around the globe. Additionally, as a member of the Cambridge University Nigerian Society, she formed deep connections with peers from diverse backgrounds.
Angela expressed her gratitude to the Mastercard Foundation for providing resources and opportunities that extended beyond academics, making her Cambridge experience one of the most enriching chapters of her life.
Before pursuing her master’s degree in the UK, Angela graduated with first-class honors in Agriculture from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Nigeria. Her academic journey is a testament to her resilience and determination, overcoming challenges to fulfill her dreams.
