Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto is celebrating its 50th anniversary and 42nd convocation with a week-long event featuring academic and cultural activities, during which 4,024 students are graduating — 119 with first-class honors — and honorary degrees and emeritus titles are being awarded to distinguished individuals.


Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) is commemorating its 50th anniversary alongside its 42nd convocation ceremony — a landmark celebration of academic excellence, institutional growth, and national service.
The week-long celebration, scheduled from Monday, September 1 to Saturday, September 6, 2025, features a range of events including academic lectures, cultural showcases, humanitarian outreach, and technological exhibitions.
Speaking at a press briefing, UDUS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bashiru Garba, announced that 119 students have graduated with first-class honors out of a total of 4,024 graduating students. The full breakdown includes 3,561 undergraduates, 463 postgraduate students, and 120 PhD recipients.
Professor Garba emphasized the university’s evolution over the past five decades, highlighting its strong focus on academic quality, innovative research, and impactful community service. He also expressed gratitude to the past leaders, faculty, students, and stakeholders who have contributed to the institution’s journey.
As part of the milestone celebration, the university will confer honorary degrees on two notable individuals:
- Sheikh Muhammad Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa
- Lt. Gen. Faruku Yahaya (Rtd.), former Chief of Army Staff (COAS)
Additionally, Professor Dejo Abdulrahman will be awarded the prestigious title of Emeritus Professor for his significant contributions to the university.
In recognition of its past and to honor legacy builders, the university has renamed key infrastructure in memory of distinguished individuals who have helped shape UDUS into a leading academic institution.
This golden jubilee and convocation ceremony symbolize a proud reflection of UDUS’s achievements and its forward-looking commitment to education, leadership, and national development.
