UniJos Students Protest Week-Long Power Outage, Demand Immediate Response

Students of the University of Jos protested over a prolonged power outage and lack of water in their hostels, demanding immediate action from the university management.

Students of the University of Jos staged a protest on Tuesday over the prolonged lack of electricity in their hostels, a situation they say has severely affected their daily lives and academic activities.

The protesting students explained that they had been living without electricity for more than a week since returning to campus for the academic session. According to them, the blackout has also disrupted water supply because the pumping machines used to distribute water depend on electricity to function.

One of the students, Felix Bala, said the conditions in the hostels had become unbearable. He explained that students had repeatedly complained to school authorities about the problem but claimed no meaningful action had been taken to restore power.

Bala stated that the protest became necessary after several days of frustration over the lack of electricity and water in the hostels. He added that toilets and other shared facilities had been left dirty because there was no running water available for cleaning and daily use.

The students noted that they waited from Thursday until Monday, hoping the situation would improve, but nothing changed. As a result, many of them decided to demonstrate and demand urgent intervention from the university management.

Another student, who preferred not to be identified, revealed that some off-campus students had tried to persuade the protesters to end the blockade and allow the authorities more time to resolve the issue. However, the protesters reportedly refused, insisting they would continue the demonstration until electricity and water were restored.

At the time the report was filed, attempts to contact the Students’ Union Government president, Senator Younglan Talyoung, and other university officials were unsuccessful. Efforts to reach the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Chris Piwunna, also did not yield any response.
