13-Year-Old Prodigy Gains Admission to KNUST, Sparks Mixed Reactions

Melchizedek Adio Baafawiise, a 13-year-old prodigy, has gained admission to KNUST to study Physics after excelling in the 2024 WASSCE, sparking widespread praise and discussions about young achievers in higher education.

A 13-year-old boy, Melchizedek Adio Baafawiise, has captured widespread attention after gaining admission to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to study Physics. The former student of St. Cyprian’s Minor Seminary SHS achieved this remarkable milestone after excelling in the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), earning five A1s and three Bs.

Melchizedek explained that he chose Physics to explore his interests, adding, “By my third or fourth year, I’ll decide whether to specialize in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.” His achievement follows a similar feat in 2017 when Ruth Gyan-Darkwa was admitted to KNUST to study Mathematics at the same age.

The news of Melchizedek’s admission has been widely celebrated, with over 1,000 likes and 100 comments on social media. Ruth Gyan-Darkwa, now a PhD student, congratulated him, urging him to stay focused and motivated. She remarked, “I know he can do it.”

Social media users also shared their thoughts:

Pakar Erst suggested, “A dual-degree program in Mathematics and Physics would be fantastic, followed by a Master’s in computer or electrical engineering.”

Emmanuel Ninvoee, a former teacher of Melchizedek, described him as “a great lad” and wished him well.

Bawa Wakaso celebrated, saying, “You are at the best university in Africa. Alhamdulillah.”

While many praised his academic success, some questioned the implications of enrolling children at such a young age in rigorous university programs. Awine Evans Azure asked, “Is it appropriate to put so much pressure on young children?”

Others highlighted the trend of young prodigies being admitted to KNUST, with Felix Sabobo Ativor noting, “I don’t know why it’s always KNUST that these 13-year-olds go to.”

Melchizedek’s achievement reflects a promising future as he embarks on his academic journey. With support from family, mentors, and well-wishers, he is poised to inspire others while exploring his aspirations in Physics and engineering.
