West Muhammad, a 14-year-old prodigy, earned a full scholarship to Coppin State University to study Cybersecurity, aiming to graduate by 18 and inspire others through his achievements.

A remarkable 14-year-old named West Muhammad has earned a full scholarship to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity at Coppin State University, making him one of the youngest students ever admitted to the institution.
West was awarded the prestigious Fanny Jackson Coppin Scholarship, a competitive four-year award that covers full tuition and provides up to $1,000 annually for books. Out of approximately 600 admitted students, only 31 earned this coveted scholarship. Coppin State’s Director of Admissions, Jinawa McNeil, highlighted that scholarship recipients are not only academically exceptional but also well-prepared for co-curricular engagement.
West’s decision to attend Coppin State was deeply personal, as his mother is an alumna of the university. “So far, it’s been a great experience. It’s inspiring to see so many young Black students working hard to become nurses, lawyers, and doctors. Being in this environment where others are striving to succeed is really motivating,” West shared.
From a young age, West’s learning journey was fast-tracked. His mother recalled playing phonics CDs in the car, and by age 3, West was already reading. After enrolling in pre-kindergarten, he was quickly advanced to first grade, demonstrating his exceptional abilities.
Throughout middle school, West meticulously mapped out his college plans, blending public and private education with homeschooling and community college courses to stay ahead. His mother noted that this accelerated path was not only meant to challenge him academically but also to shield him from the negative influences in their neighborhood.
“Rather than having him look up to guys on the corner, I wanted him to look up to men in suits and bow ties,” she explained. “At home, we use vision boards and set a lot of goals. West is a natural goal-setter and high achiever.”
West’s fascination with technology began when he received his first computer. “I became curious about computer viruses. I never got one, but I wanted to understand how they worked and how hackers could take control of computers,” he explained. This curiosity led him to choose Cybersecurity Engineering as his major.
West plans to take on internships during college, graduate by age 18, and eventually launch his own company. His ultimate goal is to inspire other young people to believe in themselves and pursue what may seem out of reach.
“My journey has shown that things we often see as impossible are, in fact, achievable,” West said.
With a bright future ahead, West Muhammad serves as an inspiring example of how hard work, determination, and the right environment can open doors to extraordinary achievements.
