17-Year-Old Nigerian Girl Wins Top Spot in UK English Contest, Outshines 69 Countries

Seventeen-year-old Nafisat Aminu from Yobe State, Nigeria, has won first place in English at the TeenEagle Global Finals in London, outperforming over 20,000 participants from 69 countries.

A Nigerian student from Yobe State, Nafisat Aminu, has made history by clinching the top prize in English Language at the TeenEagle Global Finals—a prestigious international academic competition held in London, United Kingdom.

Beating over 20,000 participants from 69 countries, Nafisat excelled in areas including comprehension, vocabulary, expression, and critical thinking. Organizers described this year’s contest as the most competitive yet, drawing participants from across continents and testing their mastery of the English language through rigorous assessments and presentations.

Nigerians on social media were quick to celebrate Nafisat’s accomplishment. One user, @abbeykool, posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Nigeria wins again.” Another added: “We have the best brains. We always shine when it matters.”

Though her school and family have yet to issue public statements, many are hailing Nafisat as a symbol of the country’s educational potential.

This milestone comes amid a wave of recognition for Nigerian talent. Earlier this week, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced cash rewards for the women’s basketball team D’Tigress and the Super Falcons for their continental championship triumphs.

The TeenEagle Global Finals are designed to evaluate teens’ English skills on a global stage. Organizers confirmed that candidates were selected from high schools and language institutes worldwide.

Further details on the official award ceremony are expected soon.
