Sizwe Maguni, a 23-year-old man from South Africa, lost both parents at 18 months but defied the odds to earn a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Zululand with 24 distinctions.
Raised by his grandmother and aunt through a child support grant, Sizwe grew up in poverty but remained focused on education, determined to change his circumstances. Despite facing numerous challenges, including the loss of his aunt during his matric year, Sizwe stayed committed to his studies, honoring a promise to her to pursue a good education.
“I was extremely close to her, and it was hard when she passed away. Two days before she died, she told me to study hard and get a good education,” he shared.
Throughout his academic journey, Sizwe credited his teachers for their unwavering support, both financially and emotionally. “They stayed in touch with me during my studies and helped me with finances when I needed it most,” he said.
Although he initially aspired to become a lawyer, Sizwe found his passion in education. He graduated from Gelekede Secondary School with seven distinctions and consistently maintained top grades at university. His commitment to hard work was key to his success.
“During high school, I would study until 1:30 a.m. and wake up at 4 a.m. to prepare for exams. Even at university, I worked with a study group called ‘Mlolozy,’” Sizwe recalled.
His story is an inspiring example of resilience, dedication, and the power of education in transforming lives.
