Story Title: The Trial of Okiki
Episode 5
So the trial of okiki became a daily trend and talks of the campus. People gossiped around other than to mind there businesses, some took their time to pray for him while some wished he never succeeded.
The school session has ended and another session has begun and still yet okiki was still at remanded in the police cell. He supported his head with his left palm as different thought crossed his heart. He never wanted to end up that way. He blamed himself for helping Jessica and he vowed to never in his life help people again. This is the seventh month he has been appearing in court and his tenth month in police custody, his mates have graduated from the school and are getting ready to be called for the NYSC, tears dropped down his face as he doesn’t even know what awaits him at the court of law. He cried bitterly.
Thereafter, sergeant Abdul took him out of the cell, Sergeant Abdul told him he has a female visitor at the hall, Okiki has never been visited by a female at the station so he was surprised. He followed the sergeant to the hall with his hands chained. He saw the lady, she introduced herself as Barrister Ayodele ,she is a colleague to his lawyer who is currently down with illness and she would take his place at the court. she assured him of success and adviced him to cling to prayers. “You will be discharged and aqquited by the court and would have the chance to go back to school and get your degree” Barrister Ayodele assured him.
He was yet to recover from the night’s sleep when he heard some voices in his cell, he opened his eyes and it was already Monday morning (the day he will appear at the court to continue his trial), he was given some water to bath and a “first class” food to eat before he was led to the prison van(black maria) Okiki was shocked because he has never been treated this way by the policemen, his lawyer has advocated for the inhumane treatment on him and the court has ordered them to treat him like a free person. He was led to the van and they drove off.
His case was the first to be attended to and the both lawyers came to defend their client. Barrister Ayodele replaced the sick lawyer with the permission of the court, Okiki stood at his normal place and he prayed silently to God to shower His mercy upon him. The judge entered, took his position, he adjusted his glasses before he continued, “where is the doctor in charge of the fingerprint test”? he asked. The doctor quietly came out and handed over the result to the judge, the judge himself was scared, he hoped that the finger wont be Okiki’s own. The look on the judge’s face sent a scary signal to Okiki, h prayed he won’t be implicated with this again. The judge opened the result and smiled a little, “according to the test carried out by the medicals, the finger was not Okiki’s finger, the print shows the finger is a lady’s, we would try as much as possible to arrest and the culprit must face the music”. the judge explained. For the first time in ten months Okiki was happy, he was filled with tears. The judge smiled again and then ordered for the immediate arrest of the lady, he adjourned the case till when she was arrested, “I rise!”.
Okiki was happy throughout the day and the little hope of being discharge came alive. He was advised by his lawyer not to attend to anybody until the final hearing. The policemen in charge of the case tried as much as possible to trace the lady’s movement but she was too smart for them. It took them four weeks to grab their hands on her, she was at the airport on her way to Chicago when she was arrested and was taken to the police station, no one was allowed to see or question her.
Then on the day of the hearing at the court, Okiki was brought to his place , the judge then ordered the policemen to bring the lady inside the court ,immediately Okiki saw the lady he was shocked and he called her by name forgetting that he was in the court, Ashake!!!, Barrister Ayodele was suprised, everyone was surprised by how Okiki knew Ashake, the judge smiled and adjusted his seat, “this must be an intresting case”he said to himself as he continued.
