John Mevemeo has filed a lawsuit against the University of Cape Coast, challenging the extension of Vice-Chancellor Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong’s term, citing violations of constitutional and institutional statutes.
The University of Cape Coast (UCC) is facing a lawsuit seeking to prevent its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, from continuing in his position. The lawsuit, filed by John Mevemeo, a resident of Millennium City-Kasoa in the Central Region, challenges the extension of Boampong’s tenure.
Boampong’s initial term as Vice-Chancellor lasted from August 1, 2020, to July 31, 2024. However, his term was extended until July 31, 2026. Mevemeo contends that this extension violates Article 199(1) of the Constitution and specific provisions of the UCC Statutes, specifically statutes 8.15 and 8.16 from the 2016 edition. According to these statutes, a Vice-Chancellor’s tenure can be renewed for a maximum of three years, but not beyond the statutory retirement age of 60. Boampong is expected to reach this age on September 18, 2025.
Furthermore, Mevemeo alleges that the UCC Council did not adhere to the proper procedures for the appointment and renewal of the Vice-Chancellor’s position. This lawsuit raises important questions about the university’s adherence to legal and institutional guidelines.
