David Okenwa, a top Nigerian engineering graduate, secured a PhD admission at Oregon State University without a master’s degree and celebrated the achievement as a step toward advancing sustainable industrial practices and leadership, despite facing challenges along the way.
David, who graduated as the top student in his department at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, during the 2018/2019 academic year with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, shared the news of his achievement on LinkedIn.
David Okenwa, a brilliant Nigerian engineer, has earned admission to pursue a PhD at Oregon State University in the United States without first obtaining a master’s degree.
David, who graduated as the top student in his department at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, during the 2018/2019 academic year with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, shared the news of his achievement on LinkedIn.
He revealed that his PhD studies will focus on Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, while he will also be conducting research at the Industrial Sustainability Lab. In addition, he will take on the role of Operations Manager at Oregon State University’s Energy Efficiency Center (EEC), funded by the US Department of Energy and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
David expressed how this opportunity perfectly aligns with his ambitions to advance sustainable industrial practices, influence policy, and contribute to the global energy transition, while further developing his leadership skills. He gratefully acknowledged the crucial support from various individuals, including EducationUSA Lagos advisors, mentors, family, and friends, who helped him achieve this milestone.
Though he faced setbacks such as rejections and admissions without funding, David remained determined and encouraged others to keep applying for opportunities abroad, regardless of their perceived qualifications. He is excited about the growth and new experiences awaiting him on his academic journey.
