NECO examiners have threatened a nationwide protest over unpaid dues for grading the 2024 exams, giving NECO a two-week deadline to settle payments or face legal action and coordinated demonstrations.
Examiners employed by the National Examinations Council (NECO) to grade the 2024 student exams have issued a nationwide protest threat over delayed payments, despite completing their marking duties months ago.
A letter, dated November 8, 2024, and directed to NECO’s Chief Registrar, highlighted the examiners’ frustration with the delayed payments and was widely circulated among examiners across various states, including Kano and Plateau. The letter criticizes NECO for withholding the wages owed, pointing out that only a small fraction of examiners have received compensation despite their crucial role in processing the examination results, which were released over a month ago.
The letter states: “It is unacceptable that our payments have been delayed for such an extended period. If NECO does not resolve the issue within two weeks, examiners nationwide will mobilize for a protest and may consider legal action for negligence and disregard for their rights as workers.”
Several examiners expressed readiness to participate in the protest if NECO fails to address their demands. However, efforts to reach NECO’s Chief Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, for comments were unsuccessful as his phone was switched off when contacted by our correspondent.
