Akwa Ibom Government Investigates Boarding Schools After Viral Video of Poor Meals

The Akwa Ibom State government has launched an investigation into all boarding schools and suspended a principal following a viral video exposing poor meals served to students, emphasizing its commitment to student welfare and education under Governor Umo Eno’s administration.

The Akwa Ibom State government has initiated a comprehensive investigation into boarding facilities in public schools following a viral video showing students at Presbyterian Senior Science College, Ididep, being served substandard meals.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, announced the immediate suspension of the school’s principal, Dr. Nse Sunday Umoh, pending the outcome of the investigation. She disclosed that the probe would extend to all 25 boarding secondary schools in the state to assess hostels, dining halls, recreation spaces, menus, kitchens, and sanitation facilities.

Mrs. Etiebet explained, “Following the very disturbing video, I paid an unscheduled visit to the school. I have directed a comprehensive review jointly overseen by the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Education and the State Secondary Education Board.”

She emphasized that while the state’s free education policy covers only tuition fees, the welfare and dignity of students remain a top priority under Governor Umo Eno’s administration.

The commissioner urged parents to take responsibility for supporting their children’s needs and assured the public of the government’s commitment to upholding minimum standards in public schools. She added, “We appeal for patience as the investigation progresses. Governor Umo Eno remains steadfast in advancing education under his ARISE agenda.”

This investigation underscores the administration’s determination to ensure quality education and improved living conditions for students in Akwa Ibom’s public schools.
