Ghanaian Student Fatally Stabbed in Canada Shortly After Starting New Part-time Job

Alfred Okyere, a 23-year-old Ghanaian student in Canada, was fatally stabbed by a co-worker at his part-time job in Saskatoon just four months after arriving to pursue his studies, leaving his family and the community in shock.

Alfred Okyere, a 23-year-old international student from Ghana, was fatally stabbed in Saskatoon, Canada, on January 20, 2025, just a week into his part-time job at DSI Underground Canada, a mining supply company. Alfred had arrived in Saskatoon in September 2024 to pursue studies in Computer Science and was residing with his sister, Lydia Obeng.

According to reports, during a break at work, a 53-year-old co-worker attacked Alfred, stabbing him 17 times in 30 seconds. Emergency services were called to the scene around 8 p.m. CST, and Alfred was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended shortly after by Saskatoon police. The motive for the attack remains unknown, and members of the Major Crime Section are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident

Alfred’s sister, Lydia Obeng, expressed her disbelief and sorrow over the tragic loss of her brother. The Ghanaian community in Saskatoon has also mourned his passing, raising concerns about the safety of international students in the area.
