9 Common Mistakes JAMB Candidates Make and How to Avoid Them

1. Not Seeking  Help

You need to understand that no man is an island. No one has a monopoly of knowledge. As a student who is intentional about growth and success in your JAMB examination, ensure you ask questions and seek clarification, especially about the registration and strategies to follow to be successful with JAMB examination.

There are people who have been there before you, learn from their experience by asking for guidance. As the former president of the United States, Barrack Obama rightly stated,  Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do it every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, it is a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.

Ask questions, seek clarity!!

2. Choosing the wrong subject combination

Passing the UTME and gaining admission into your preferred course and choice of isn’t just about writing and passing the examination, it also involves registering for the right subject combination.

Having the wrong subject combination can lead to not being offered admission or getting admitted in an entirely different course. For instance, if you intend to study law at the university, aside from the English Language, your subject combination ought to include Government, Literature or Religious Studies.

You can’t register Economics and Accounting and expect to be offered admission even if you passed with a high mark. Those are the wrong subject combinations!. Closely related to this is picking the wrong institution.

There was a story of a lady who wanted to study sociology and was looking at applying to the Federal University of Technology, Minna, clearly it wouldn’t have been possible because the school doesn’t offer that course.

Don’t just choose a school because it has a lower cut off mark, choose a school that truly offer the course you’re selecting and is accredited.

3. Not Staying Informed

All students who are desirous of studying in the Tertiary institution are expected to always stay informed with the latest JAMB Updates.

You can join platforms that always share the latest JAMB Updates.

If you miss important updates, you may miss your chance of gaining admission.

The best platform to join for latest JAMB updates is ALLSCHOOL JAMB Group. It is absolutely FREE to join.

Not checking your emails to see regularly may lead to you not receiving crucial information even when it is sent directly to you.

To avoid this, ensure you check your emails regularly. Make it a daily habit so you won’t miss out on any opportunity or information to be sent by JAMB.

4. Not having a study plan

You cannot write and pass JAMB with a distinction if you do not have a study plan. In fact a candidate who would pass tremendously is known during the studying stage and not during the examination.

Avoid this by drawing up a study plan and study following the plan judiciously months before the examination day. Having a plan helps you to be focused and accountable yourself.

It helps you to know how to distribute your study time to cover all the necessary subjects and topics.

Joining ALLSCHOOL JAMB Lesson will really help you have a study plan you are truthful with.

The lesson will help you study every Monday to Saturday, 7 pm – 11 pm.

If you’re serious about scoring very high in your JAMB exam, then don’t make the mistake of not joining the ALLSCHOOL JAMB Lesson.

5. Being anxious:

Anxiety and lack of confidence can affect your overall performance in a negative way. Anxiety makes you emit the energy of a defeatist and sends away from you the idea that you can scale through the examination successfully.

Lack of confidence leads to self-doubt and fear of failure.

This in turn limits you from choosing the right answers when you finally sit for the examination. It makes you to doubt if the answers you’re picking are correct or not. Avoid this by speaking words of affirmation to yourself.

Stay away from people or friends who continuously speak about the difficulties in passing JAMB.  Be sure that you compliment this with studying rightly to boost your confidence.

6. Poor Time Management

Another mistake students or JAMB candidates make over the years is thinking they have the whole time in the world to study or sit for the examination.

You may start studying timeously but that does not translate to having the whole time to yourself. If you start studying early but are not consistent with your studies, you will still fail the exams sadly.

JAMB examinations are timed and once your time is up you will automatically be logged out of the site. JAMB does not offer the candidates the luxury of time to write examinations as they want.

Avoid making this mistake by practicing time management. Start with your studying. Ensure you use up the time you set for a particular subject when you study.

If your study plan involves studying for 3 hours per day, ensure you use up those 3 hours daily and consistently. Also time yourself when practicing past questions, in that way you would be able to improve on the time you spend on a particular question.

Also, register for JAMB mock examination to test your speeding at answering questions. Remember you may be intelligent but still fail JAMB due to lack of or poor time management.

7. Neglecting area of weakness:

As a JAMB candidate, you ought to know your areas of strength and weaknesses and focus on improving on your areas of weaknesses. Candidates make the mistake of assigning the same study time for all subjects even when they find some subjects more challenging than others.

Let’s say for instance that a candidate is interested in studying Engineering at a higher institution. Of course, Mathematics is expected to be part of his subject combinations.

If however he finds mathematics difficult, it will be wrong to dedicate the same hour of study to it as he does English or any other subject. Your study plan should be realistic and geared towards truly helping you to ace your examination. Assign more time to the subject you’re having challenges with!

8. Not writing down details (password to email)

This seems a small issue but actually it isn’t. Some candidates are careless with their registration details like log in email and password or even JAMB centres they are assigned to and the time and date for their examination.

You can only confirm your JAMB examination date and time through your personal candidate’s dashboard on the JAMB site. Forgetting your login details will mean not having access to the portal.

Avoid this by writing your details down and keeping them safe to avoid getting lost or forgotten.

9. Avoiding past questions:

Some candidates also make the mistake of neglecting past questions. This is laughable because most questions set by JAMB come from the questions used in previous years.

Not studying past questions prevents you from knowing how JAMB questions come and the right way to answer them.

Avoid this by having a good relationship with past times. You can get them affordably at bookshops or online platforms. Practice past questions regularly.

BONUS: Patronising Unlicensed JAMB Vendors:

This is a grave mistake that can affect your overall performance. Patronising unlicensed JAMB vendors can lead to incorrect entering of your details which will later affect your admission or you could also be overcharged.

Enquire about the café or vendor you intend to patronize before sharing your details with them.

Conclusion

Avoiding the listed mistakes above by following the stated recommendations will help save your time and money and will ultimately ensure everything regarding JAMB is sorted for you
