Nigerian Lady Celebrates Solo Graduation as the Only Student in Her Department at Bamidele Olumilua University (video)

A Nigerian lady, Edit By Rhema, joyfully celebrated her solo graduation from Bamidele Olumilua University after completing her Industrial Mathematics degree as the only student in her department.

A Nigerian lady has captured attention online after revealing that she was the sole student in her department throughout her time at university—and now, she’s graduating alone.

The graduate, identified as Edit By Rhema on TikTok, studied Industrial Mathematics at Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI) in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State. In a celebratory video posted to her TikTok page, Edit shared her excitement about completing her degree as the only student in her class.

Dancing joyfully in her graduation attire, she captioned the video:

“You have been the only one in your department and now you are convocating on Saturday.”

Her story quickly gained traction, with many people expressing surprise at the rare experience of being the only student in a department. Jokes filled the comment section, with some suggesting she must have acted as her own class representative and departmental president.

The experience of being the only student in a class brings unique challenges, particularly in terms of social interaction and academic dynamics. Research from Bondebjerg et al., in their study on the effects of small class sizes, suggests that having fewer classmates can limit opportunities for peer learning and social development.

Their study noted:

“Small class sizes may lead to decreased variation in academic and social skills within the class, limiting the potential for positive peer effects on student academic learning and socioemotional development (e.g., learning from peers with more advanced academic skills).”

However, the researchers also pointed out that small classes can be beneficial in certain contexts, such as special education, where students may receive more individualized attention and tailored support.

Despite the possible social challenges, Edit By Rhema made the most of her unique university experience. Her solo graduation marks a significant achievement and serves as a testament to her determination and passion for her studies.
