No Student Died in Cult Clash – UNIPORT Clarifies

The University of Port Harcourt has clarified that no student died in the recent cult clash on campus, with one injured student receiving treatment and three suspects apprehended.

The University of Port Harcourt has debunked claims that students were injured or killed during a cult clash on its Abuja campus on Wednesday.

Reports suggest that a clash between two factions of the Vikings Confraternity left one student severely injured, with three suspects apprehended. The altercation, allegedly sparked by leadership disputes within the group, resulted in one student being attacked with a machete. The injured student is currently receiving medical treatment, and rumors of a death have been dismissed.

Student Union President, Azirindu Martins, confirmed the incident, urging the university security to conduct regular checks in bushy areas, as weapons used were not from the campus. He stressed that no student died and that immediate action by campus security, police, and the Vice Chancellor prevented further escalation.

Martins noted, “No student died. It was a cult clash between two factions of the Vikings Confraternity. The school security and police acted quickly, and three individuals were apprehended.”

In a press release, university spokesperson Sam Kpenu emphasized that the Vice Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill, was present at the scene, ensuring order was restored. Kpenu reiterated UNIPORT’s zero-tolerance policy towards cultism, confirming the campus remains peaceful with students continuing their regular activities.

“The University of Port Harcourt wishes to clarify that no student was killed or injured during the incident, and the situation was swiftly managed by the school’s management, security unit, and the Nigeria Police. The apprehended individuals are now in police custody,” Kpenu stated. He also refuted exaggerated reports from some online sources.
